I”m pretty picky when it comes to singers. I must get that from my parents because we are a bunch of simon cowells, and randy jacksons when it comes to judging singers. Its rare that I hear someone that literally gives me goosebumps when they sing. Acoustic singer songwriters in Toronto are a dime a dozen, and Alysha is on a whole other level. She has a very playful, jazzy, and soulful voice. Her songwriting, melodies, and lyrics are great and refreshing. And a gorgeous girl to boot. Overall this girl is The Shit!

I had the pleasure of performing with her at a pub in Hanover. It was a long drive, a lot of money spent just getting there, but it was totally worth it. Pub gigs are so unpredictable to begin with anyway. People are drunk, their talking, their eating. You often wonder if people actually give a shit. Surprisingly they did somewhat give a damn about the incredible talent on stage. After all of our sets were completed, their was so much praise over Alysha’s voice, along with some drunk dudes trying to hit on her. Alysha is someone to follow and pay close attention to. As I like to say, it’s only a matter of ’when’ not ‘if’ Alysha Brillinger will be very successful.

All I ask is to take a listen, watch the videos, and hopefully get inspired like I did when hearing her.

Chad Price New Single Another Day

The time has come for Chad Price to release his debut album In This Dream on March 6th. Produced by Bill Bell (Jason Mraz, Justin nozuka). His first single called Another Day is about to hit radio, and is already being shared on facebook, twitter, youtube, and the feedback has been amazing. He’s signed to Attack Records, and being distrubuted by Universal/Interscope. I’m glad to be drumming for him, and sharing the journey to bring great music to the world. I freaking love the internet. why? because an hour into D’Angelo’s first show in a long ass time, the footage from a fan hits youtube and goes viral. And why are people excited? because D’Angelo’s Voodoo album is one of the most respected and loved R&B Soul albums ever created. It was an album that needed to exist. After 10 years from the release of Voodoo, he is finally back.

Rihanna’s You Da One is a catchy ass song. The video is pretty hot too. Or it’s just that Rihanna looks hot in the video, and there are some really good freeze frame moments. When I hear a song like hers, and it’s a hit, I must make a cover of it. This is no ordinary cover, it’s a straight up Remix. Everyone that was doing drum covers to this record, was performing it like song, and usually i’d follow, but not this time. Soca Riddems be runnin through me head when me ear dis song. I found an acappella and created the entire arrangement.

Jason Mraz I won’t give up Drum Cover

I heard this song last week, and I had the same feeling when I heard Adele’s rolling in the deep. Songs like I won’t give up or Rolling in the deep, are cries to the musicians and singers of the world to step up their game. There’s nothing wrong with making a quick, and really good hit record, but “a great song” tends to hit people in a way some can’t even describe. It just “feels so good”.

And if I ever hear someone complain about there are no great songs out there, that it’s just quick bubble gum pop, or throwaway records, I’ll play them I Won’t Give Up by Jason Mraz

Akai MPC Renaissance – Are you gonna get it?

If your black, like hip-hop, and your a beat maker, you’ve heard of the MPC. When it comes to music production and hip-hop, the bond with the MPC has lasted and making hits for 25 years (says Akai). I find in many conversations, producers and beat makers live and die by the MPC. So when Akai comes out with a new one, it’s obviously making heads turn.

When any new piece of gear that hits the market from a company that is loved by many at one time or another, the typical questions are usually asked:
How Much? I/O connections? (Input/Output), computer Integration? workflow?

I’ll let it be known, that I don’t own an MPC, nor Machine, or Beat Thang. But this debate as to which one is better is worth it. I would love to add one of these products to my studio, and any informative opinion is justified.

What I look for in a drum machine would be:

-Workflow How quickly you can sample, find sounds, make a beat, edit, and track out are tremendously important. The more thinking you do will interrupt the creative process.

-Connections I want damn near all the connections in the world, the more the better. Every beat maker or producer has their own signal path that works for them and their gear. The more possibilities of connectivity make the drum machine easily inter-gradable into any studio.

-Software There was a time when people looked at computers for music production, and laughed. Now it’s mandatory for a piece of gear designed for creating beats to have some sort of software to easily transfer or edit files directly from your computer.

-Cost Are you broke? because I am, and my credit card would hate me if I purchased something over $1000 right now.

Every time I go out to jam sessions, open mics, showcase etc. it makes me wonder why these artist and bands aren’t as big as they should be. There are many reasons for it, which i’ll explain in one of many music business blogs to come. It gets me excited to hear voices like Madette Mendoza, and it re assures me that there is hope for artist like her to become successful.

I cam across Madette through a mutual friend Iman (you’ll be hearing from her soon). Madette needed a cajon player for a gig. Turns out there were a few cajon players waiting in line for it. She didn’t end up using a cajon player, but I impressed her enough that she’ll look my way for future shows. What she doesn’t know is that I have some songs that she NEEDS to sing on. I’ll be doing my best to make that happen. Stay Tuned

2012 is about 8 hours away. It’s time to reflect, and embark on new journey that awaits us. Or just get hammered, and try to reflect about the kick ass night you had before.

So when it’s a few minutes to midnight, this is the song to bring in the new year. Its called Midnight by Mac Graham. I play drums for him, and this song is always a blast to play. The video was shot in my new favorite city, N’awlins. We were set to play there in 2010 for a music business conference, and decided to make a video, guerrilla style, shooting on Bourbon St.
